Our Rescues!

Winnie - Cairn mix. Rescued from Luzerne Shelter in April 1999. She was fostered by us for 16 months. Winnie was finally placed in her wonderful forever home (with her brother Chester), in Rhode Island, with Tony and Laura Rotelli, in August 2000.

Ginger...our first rescue that stayed. Ginger had a rough start, and really by all reasoning, should not be here. But, she is - and she is ours. Her write-up and "tail" is told on the Clan Page. Ginger is also the CalliopeCairn Website Official "Mascot".

Daisey, a beautiful Cairn Terrier girl, came under our wing in November, 1999, with our Ginger.

Daisey came to us through a friend when she learned of the conditions under which the two little Cairn girls were being kept, being bred for profit and kept outside in a dirt kennel 24/7. Our Ginger, "escaped" with Daisey (then known as Pepper) in tow, and as luck would have it, Ginger was run over by a car. Daisey, unharmed was pulled into our rescue and placed, Ginger of course, stayed here with us. That's where the story gets even better. Amy's childhood friend, Valerie, adopted Daisey into her family of humans and Cairns. Daisey is living in Amy's old "stomping grounds" of Pompton Lakes, NJ, with two Cairn brothers, Mickey and Donald; and a Cairn sister, Minnie. She also now has two human brothers as well as a mom and a dad. Things could not have worked out better for Daisey, and she is never going to be uprooted and mistreated again. Our most recent picture of Daisey shows just how "fat and happy" she is in her forever home.

Gus is a Yellow Lab mix. He was scooped up off the road and rescued in May 2000, and placed through the Lackawanna Shelter.

Remie is a Full Springer Spaniel. Remie was rescued and placed with Eddy Jo and Mary Marshall, in Bath Pennsylvania, in January, 1999.

Donald is a Full Cairn. He was rescued and placed with Val and Bob Pokrywa, in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey in September, 2001.

Beezer - Full Cairn. Rescued from Luzerne Shelter, in February 2000. Beezer was placed in his wonderful forever home, with Sam and Chicky Divine, in New York state, April 2001.

Lizzie - Full Cairn. Privately rescued, and fostered for 4 months. Lizzie was placed with Bernice Brioso and JoJo Cyr, in Massachusetts, December 2001.

Dingus - Full Border Collie. Fostered and placed in April, 2002, in Northeast Pennsylvania.

Sarge - Full German Shep - Rescued and placed in his wonderful forever home (with his new sister Molly) and Jan and John Ambrutis, in Lake Carey, Pennsylvania. February, 2002.

Tux - Short Hair Tuxedo. Rescued by our vet and placed with Ted and Penny Gatto, in New Albany, Pennsylvania. June 2002. Although his life was short, it was a good one once he was adopted to his forever home. Tux crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 1/19/07. Rest well sweet kitty.

Binx - Full Cairn. Rescued from Luzerne Shelter in August 2002. Binx was placed in his wonderful forever home with Bob and Bonnie Dodge (and his Cairn sister, Kelsey), West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Wookie - "The dog in cage 34". This first picture as seen by a Cairn rescuer in Ohio over the Internet, sent her off to the shelter to check this "Cairn mix" out, according to our rescue standards.

Could this be a Cairn so scared that his ears are down? A bit too big, but she took him anyway.

Wookie, another rescue who stayed has his story on the Clan Page.

This is Missy. Missy's picture appeared on the Luzerne SPCA web site, and we went to get her. The first picture is from the shelter. The rest are from her "initiation" at Calliope. Including the smile she gave her new Dad, just because she could. She arrived on February 22, 2003, and she is another one of those rescues that isn't going to leave. Missy will be staying at Calliope for the rest of her days. There are more pictures of Missy on the Clan page Clan Page. After close evaluation we have decided that she is Cairn and Schipperke mixed, but mostly Cairn (of course!).

Corky came to us with some pretty major behavior issues, when he was just seven months old, in June 2003, as an owner surrender. Snapping, growling, pushing people around. He reminded me of one of the Bowery Boys...but oh so loving. Giving kisses to humans all the time, kind of made you wonder what his problems were. We made sure he had his neutering taken care of right away and then took it from there. Well, he spent some time with Barbara Hadden at the Pet Lodge here in Mehoopany, and then went on to Biloxi, MS. to spend time with our Cairn experienced Foster Mommy, Karen Parrott, and now he is in the FOREVER home in Indiana. Corky shares his new home with two humans, two Great Danes, and a Cairn Mix sister. High Cotton came to Corky... His former family that so thoughtfully surrendered him to Colonel Potter should be very pleased, and very proud.

Little Fae...what a story. I received a call from a very concerned friend of animals that this little Cairn was tied to a dog house, literally for YEARS! They saw her in passing, year after year. After much discussion I simply said if you find the dog loose or wandering, get her to a shelter and have them call me. Then you call me and let me know where she is, and we'll take it from there. Basically, that's what this person needed to know, what if she found the dog wandering and was in a position to do something. Well, it happened, and little Fae came into our care. What a sick little girl she was, she spent her first month with Colonel Potter at a vet's office in NY, getting treated for every kind of infection you can think of, parasites, you name it, she had it. She was so sick, we had to wait to have her spayed until we were sure she could handle the surgery. Now, Fae is in long-term foster care because she has some issues. You see, being tied to a dog house day in and day out, does something to a dog. She's learned right from wrong, and is healthy now, probably for the FIRST time in her life. She still longs for human approval, and gets it with every step she takes. Fae was adopted into a glorious forever home through the loving care of Colonel Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue, and is now known as Skylar-Fae.

She was living her life in "high cotton" in Virginia, but fate had different plans and Skylar Fae crossed the Rainbow Bridge early in 2005. Rest well little darlin' you earned it.

This is Amy, a full red and white Basset. She was about 9 months old when we rescued her...we actually "rescued" her four times, and the final time, we did what was right. She was transported to Suzanne, a Basset Rescue Angel, and placed in a wonderful home with a Basset brother and a human family that adores her. A real family to love, and that loved her by showing her how a dog is supposed to be treated. As you can see from the pictures, she was the lovey dovey of our day. It was hard to decide to give her up.....however, Amy now lives in NJ.

Ah yes, Ruppert. What a great little guy. We were contacted by friends Ed and Marilyn Bumby that they "heard" there was a Cairn at the shelter up by them. They went and checked him out and said he was a cute little fellow, but had a severe skin problem. Well, the shelter would not release him to us, but adopted him that weekend to a senior citizen who could not resist him. This wonderful woman took him to the vet, had him neutered, had him evaluated and his skin condition seemed to clear up. Turned out he is allergic to flea bites among other things. At any rate, this three year old boy could not make it as a "sedate older dog", which this little lady was hoping for. He proved to be too much for her, and she had the forethought to contact us. We arranged for Ruppert to be picked up and handed off, again, to Barbara Hadden, and there he stayed for a week and a half until.....well, his new adventure began. Ken Grabenstein came up from Pittsburgh to take Ruppert back with him to foster and evaluate him with other Cairns. Guess what?...this dog is a star! Well, as fate would have it...Ruppert IS home. Ken and Geri have formally adopted this little lad, and are now at four Cairns....I told Ken this would happen, he replied "nah"...I rest my case. Cairngratulations Ruppert! Ruppert came into our care in September 2003.

This is Daisey; a very large, very active, very wonderful Yellow Lab Mix...we received a call from Daisey's owners in January 2004, that they had this dog they needed to find a home for. She'd already been placed and returned to them, and we thought we needed to step in and help her. We made some contacts and one wonderful couple stepped forward and said they would "foster her until we could find her a forever home". We took her and transported her to this wonderful foster home...well, turned out Daisey was SO wonderful, the foster home kept her as their very own. So there she lives, the rest of her wonderful long life with dog and cat siblings and two humans that love her more than anything, right here in Nicholson, PA. Although she was already spayed, she needed much vet care. Happy Endings INDEED!

We received a request to help find a new home for Rufus, a pure bred, six year old Beagle, when his owner's life circumstances required this little dog to go live somewhere else. We worked on this guy for several months, and finally, found him a wonderful home in Clarks Summit, PA. Rufus is now living the "Life of Riley", on a sofa, with a human family that just adores him. He even has a teenage "human brother" as his constant companion. Best wishes Rufus, we were only glad to help. Rufus never stayed with us here at Calliope, but he came under our wing in April 2004.

This is Brody, a sad little 8 year old boy Cairn, who was an owner-surrender from Tunkhannock PA. We were asked by Colonel Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue to pickup and transport Buddy to his foster home, and we happily did. Along the way, we found something about this little guy's history, and learned that we had crossed paths before, about 6 years ago. He is no longer sad, and is in the loving arms of his FOREVER family...YES, his foster family couldn't give him up so he is now home forever, living with his Cairn sister Inka, Cairn brother, Tucker, and a human family that includes children, to make his life even more wonderful. CAIRNGRATULATIONS Brody!
