Calliope...
where dogs have the special life that they deserve.
The Cairn Terrier is the "best little dog in the world", that is why we have chosen this breed to devote our attention at rescue to. However, ALL dogs deserve wonderful homes and wherever or whenever there is a need and we are in a position to help, we do our very best to locate, rescue, nurse back to health, teach to love, and hopefully place our four legged friends, in a forever home. Enter this web site to see our current Calliope Clan, the friends we've saved, and their current "high cotton" status. Big or small, we love them all, but the Cairn...now that's our heart
Calliope came into existence when we learned that the township we live in was contemplating a "three dog limit", to help with the problem of nuisance or barking dogs (you know, the ones tied to dog houses 24/7?).
Three dog limit?!
We were at five and had no intention of giving up any of our kids, nor did we particularly want to seek out a new home. So we contacted the Department of Agriculture and found we could apply for a kennel license. We don't breed, show, or sell; but just wanted to see what we could do. The Dog Warden suggested we get a license, which would allow us up to 10 dogs, thereby "grandfathering" ourselves into our current pets and any others that may wander in! We did so, deciding on the name "Calliope". We have successfully been inspected twice a year since and are highly regarded by our local wardens and dog contacts.
For a little background: a calliope is a musical instrument, like a nickelodeon; a combination of many different instruments making up one concerted sound of beautiful music. Since we knew we would always have Cairn Terriers, but also knew that our hearts and home would be open to any fur baby in need, we decided not to choose a name that was singularly Cairn, Terrier, or Gaelic related; (Gaelic as our breed hails from Scotland; the Isle of Skye to be exact).
Hence...Calliope...a combination of several beautiful instruments.
